Four people died after the cab of the car cable crashed to the ground near Naples in southern Italy, emergency services say.
Another person was “very seriously injured” as a result of a crash on Mount Fita and was transferred to the hospital, officials said.
Italian media reports that one of the cables supported above was broken up on the mountain while the cable car was passing into the valley.
The President of the Vinchenza de Lu Luca region said all the victims were tourists.
De Luke added that the bad weather, including fog, wind and rain, buried rescue workers to get to the area where the cabin crashed at high altitude.
Earlier on Thursday, Italian media reported that the car stopped and several people were rescued from the second cabin, which stopped further through the valley.
Castellamare Di Stabia mayor – where the rope was located, said he believed that the traction cable cut off.
“The emergency brake downstream, but obviously not the one that was in the cabin that was going to reach the top of the hill,” he said to Italian media.
He added that on the line of the cable car there were regular security checks.
