Former Romanian President Ion Ilisk, who ruled the country’s chaotic transition from communism to democracy, has died at the age of 95.
ILIESCU was diagnosed with lung cancer and hospitalized in early June in the Romanian capital, Bucharest.
“With a deep regret, the government announces the passage of the former president of Romania, Mr. Iliscu,” the government said in a statement, adding that the state’s burial will soon be in detail.
Ilisk was the first freely elected President of Romania and twice served in 1986-1996 and 2000-2004. He was charged with crimes against humanity over a brutal uprising that overthrew Romania’s communist regime in 1989 but always denied violations.
The allegations were filed in 2019, but he was never convicted.
In particular, he was also accused of calling the miners to crush students after the 1990 elections.
Bloody repression, which became known as Mineria, attracted a wide international condemnation.
Prior to his latest hospitalization, Ilisk received regular medical checks at Elias Hospital in Bucharest.
In 2019, he underwent surgery on the pericardial fall – a condition that affects the heart.
Born on March 3, 1930, in the southern city of Olteno, Ilisk was heavily removed from public life in recent years, although he occasionally shared written messages in his personal blog.
His last post, on May 19, congratulated Liberal Bucharest, EU Mayor Nikuzar Dan, was elected president.
