For the good will to give his witches some completely new tunes

It was only a month ago Bad began to take the world by storm, and not so long that we learned that its second half was now passing Bad: For Good. Universal is not ready to reveal anything about the sequel, but that did not stop co-leader Cynthia Erivo from hyping some of the changes of the next film, especially in the music.

In a recent appearance on Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Erivo talked about his approach to playing Elphaba, who eventually becomes the famous Wicked Witch. One thing she said was to work closely with the composer of the game and film, Stephen Schwartz, to develop a new song for her character. Without giving anything away, she joked “Even the title will move you. I don’t know if you’re ready for it. When we filmed, the cast and the crew were crying. (…) I hope the audience is ready – it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.”

I might have forgotten, but Schwartz said that in 2022 there would be a couple of new songs for The bad guys the second half “to meet the demands (of narration)”. The music changes from the first film mainly concerned the characters or the setting to tell that it was no longer a stage musical, but those songs were otherwise the same. Giving Elphaba and Glinda some new tunes keeps things fresh for movie and OG fans, and it delivers Wicked: For good it feels even more like an event. And they’ll also make these new belting-inducing songs when the movie eventually gets its own singing version.

Ma Wicked: For good it needs to come out first – and it will do so on November 21, 2025. If you’ve been waiting to watch the first movie at home, good news: it’s hit digital on New Year’s Eve.
