The leaders of the four major federal parties of Canada entered the second and last discussion before the general election of this month, but someone is out of the stage that stole most: US President Donald Trump.
The big question that heads the discussion was whether the liberal leader Mark Karny, who is in the election, will stumble.
Karni, former governor of the Bank of England, managed to survive the French discussion on Wednesday, despite the fact that he was less experienced in the second language of the country.
On Thursday, he was repeatedly housed on the site of his three opponents: Conservative leader Pierre Pulievre, leader of the new Democratic Party Jagmet Singh and Bloc québécois leader Ivo-Frankua Blanchet.
How to respond to the current Canada’s current trade war was the topic, but the discussion also presented live discussions on other issues facing Canada, such as accessibility, crime and the environment.
Here are five big trips from the collision on Thursday:
Carney’s opponents quickly hone the mistakes of their unpopular predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudu.
Conservative leader Pyulieu referred to the “lost liberal decade”, citing the last 10 years when the Liberal Party was in power. He referred to problems such as the availability of housing and the high cost of life to return his moment home.
“How can we believe you are different?” Karni asked.
The blanchet also threw the glove to Karni. “You claim you are different – you need to prove that you are better.”
Carney was forced to defend himself several times, noting that he was only in the chairman of the prime minister for one month, despite the fact that he shared the same party banner as Trudu.
“I’m a completely different person than Justin Trudo,” Carney said.
The leaders were asked how they would negotiate with Trump and respond to his tariffs in Canada.
Trump has implemented 5% of Canada’s goods with the release of USMCA – the North American free trade transaction. Canada also suffered from global tariffs on the United States and aluminum and cars.
The president also publicly said that Canada became the 51st US state.
Earlier, the Canadian government stated that its position is to implement the dollar tariffs in order to maximize the pain in the US economy.
But during the discussion, the leaders seemed to claim that it was ultimately not equal.
“We have moved from the dollar dollar tariffs,” Carney said, recognizing that the US economy exceeds 10 times larger than Canada.
Liberal leader said the focus is on tariffs aimed at increasing the US pain and harm Canada as little as possible.
It seems Trump has softened his language in Canada in recent weeks. Following a phone call with the US President at the end of March, Carney said Trump “respected Canada’s sovereignty” and that their conversation was “constructive”.
Canada and the United States are expected to start trade and security negotiations after the April 28 election.
For the Canadians, established on the problems facing the country outside Trump and its tariffs, the discussion offered a significant political discussion on the topics: from housing to crime to immigration.
It was clear that the Canadians had a sharp choice before them.
Poilievre often stands for its vision of a small government, which would have lowered taxes to increase economic growth and accessibility for Canadians, and it will be difficult in the crime.
Singh, meanwhile, pushed the stronger social programs in Canada, including the expansion of national dental assistance and pharmaceutical programs and strengthening health care costs.
Karni was stuck close to the central point of view of his party.
“The government may play a role, but its role should be catalytic,” he said during the discussion segment about a strong crisis.
Blunchet, BLOC leader, used his airtime to act for different places of Quebec in Canada and protecting her unique identity.
“I don’t want to be a Canadian leader,” he said. The party supports the possible separation of Quebec from Canada and does not take places outside the province. But if it wins a number of seats, it can become a powerful voting unit in parliament.
The Canadian Political System, similar to the UK, represents several political parties: Central Liberals, Right Conservatives, Left New Democrats and Block, which manages only Quebec candidates. There is also a green party that was disqualified at the last minute because of the fact that they have not launched enough candidates.
This means that the Canadians have a clear choice when they go to the voting cabin.
But polls show that these elections of Canadians decided to support either conservatives or liberals.
This was left for the participants of the third place, fighting for survival. National polls conduct new Democrats singh at 8.5% – which can only be translated up to five places from 343, which is a large loss of 24 places.
Singh promptly pushed his voice to heard and interrupted both Puliver and Karnie, trying to separate his party as a choice for left -wing voters.
“You can’t entrust all the power of Mr. Karni,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, the Blunchet Block leader at each opportunity has inserted problems relevant to the French province.
According to the current poll, his party will also lose at least a dozen places in Quebec, and many decided to vote for the liberals because they believe that the party is better equipped to fight Trump and its threats.
There were interruptions, live discussions and even random lines of the attack. But in general, the tone of four federal leaders was quite heartfelt.
These efforts on the measured conversation were obvious at one point when the leaders discussed the housing crisis. In the rebuttal to Puliver, Karni seemed to stop before putting on his opponent.
“Misunderstanding …”, “said Carney, stopped in the middle of the destination, adding,” I will be polite. “
Even after some heated exchanges, Karni and Pulivere were removed with shaking hands and exchanged a couple of laughter.
Overall, it was a surprisingly different tone for those who watched the latest cycles of presidential debate in the United States.
It was more friendly than some past Canadian federal debates that had different liberal and conservative candidates.
