The launch of the barges caught fire after the pyrotechnics landed on them during a summer festival in the city of Japan Yokohama on Monday night.
The two boats used to launch fireworks exploded. According to the NHK Japanese public television company, five workers were rescued. One was taken to a hospital with a minor injury.
The event organizers planned to launch about 20,000 fireworks in 25 minutes as part of the festival, but the event was canceled after the fire, local media reported.
