Twenty people were killed in a nursing home in northeast China, a state media report.
Flame in Chende, Habei province, broke out on Tuesday evening and was extinguished in about two hours.
Nineteen people survived the fire and were taken to the hospital for observation, reports.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the flames, and the man responsible for the house was detained. There were no other details immediately.
On social media, some called for a careful investigation and others expressed their condolences to the elderly victims.
“Old people already have problems with mobility,” – said one Weibo user. “I don’t imagine how desperate they probably felt during the fire.”
According to the authorities, the houses of the elderly and the elderly doubled between 2019 and 2024, as China is increasingly aging the population.
