In what turned out to be a bittersweet farewell, Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews He left the test cricket when his final game ended in a tense tie Bangladesh at the International Gallery Stadium. The first test of the World Test Championship cycle of 2025-27 (WTC) saw that both teams exchange punches over five days. However, the result let Sri Lanka remain and Bangladesh ruined a lost opportunity to write a memorable victory. Despite dominating great portions of the party, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side was reduced to a direct victory, partially due to a conservative approach to the final entrances and bad rain interruptions.
Bangladesh, winning the launch and choosing to Bat, Bangladesh published a 495 commander, with an impressive collaboration of 264 runs between Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (148) and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim (163), anchoring his tickets. Litton Das collided with a 90 fluent, while Sri Lanka bowls showed up with the sun. Asitha Fernando (4/86) and Milan Rashnayake (3/39) were the selection of bowls, but they did not have sustained support from others. The marker pressure was already significant and Bangladesh had firmly stated in the contest.
In response, Sri Lanka showed his machine with an almost equivalent answer, publishing 485, only 10 shorts. The spine of its entrances was the best 187 of Pathum Nissanka (256 balls), a upper class blow that found its place among the best test baptisms currently active. Its elegant Strokelay was complemented by an 87 compound of Kamindu Mendis, allowing the hosts to absorb the pressure and coincide with the total Bangladesh almost executed. However, the effort left them slightly, which would later shape the dynamics of the game.
Bangladesh’s second entry was a slow burning subject. In summary of their battle after the fourth morning of the rain, they consumed 87 points and declared 285/6, establishing Sri Lanka a goal of 296 in 37 points. The final session, however, saw that Bangladesh would fall into the caution on the ambition. Shanto, on his way to an unbeaten historical 125, became only the 18th captain in the history of the evidence to mark a century in both entrances to a party, and the first Bangladesh to achieve this milestone. However, it took 50 deliveries after the rain to reach its hundreds, during which the team added only 19 runs and lost two doctors. The late acceleration, with 28 runs in 16 balls, represented what could have been possible if they had changed their gears before.
Given 37 points in Bowl Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Bangla was soon struck. At 24 more, Sri Lanka was 48/4, with Taijul Islam (3/23) and Nayeem Hasan (1/29) exploiting a spent and worn surface. Taijul was especially dangerous, removing Angelo Mathews in his latest test entries and then dismantling Chandimal and Lahiru Udara with shift and rebound. But Bangladesh’s late post was found with a quiet resistance. Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis absorbed the pressure and beat the last points, their uninterrupted association of 53 balls helping the hosts to close at 72/4 and get a draw. The teams shook hands with five remaining points, ending what was a rethinking, if it is slightly incomplete.
Sad to see how Mathews’s career turned out. Its first half was among the best formats, achieving long before turning 27. He averaged more than 50 after 50 tests, occupied the number 1 All-Rounder hatred and played a key role in SL’s WT20 victory with a Motm in the semis. Thank you, Angelo 🙌 pic.twitter.com/wxecflsl3g
