Australia posted a commanding 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series win India with a comprehensive six-wicket win in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The triumph marked Australia’s first series win in the BGT since 2015, snapping India’s streak of dominance in the prestigious rivalry. The hosts delivered a complete masterclass, with a stellar batting performance and clinical bowling dismantling the visitors. India’s inability to withstand Australia’s relentless pressure highlighted the difference in execution and adaptability between the two sides.
India’s batting woes started early as they were bowled out for a paltry 185 in their first innings. Scott Boland he led the Australian attack with figures of 4/31, extracting movement and bounce to trouble the Indian batsmen throughout the innings. Mitchell Starc i Pat Cummins complemented him well, taking three and two wickets respectively. The top order failed to provide a solid foundation, with Shubman Gill, KL Rahul i Virat Kohli fall cheap Rishabh pants offered resistance with a determined 40 from 98 balls, but a lack of partnerships meant that India could not capitalize on the few starts they got. The lower order crumbled under relentless pressure, leaving India on the back foot as Australia took control of the match early.
In reply, Australia managed 181, unable to gain a lead but still came close thanks to some hard hitting from Beau Webster. Webster top-scored with a composed 57 off 105 balls, displaying excellent technique against India’s disciplined bowling. Steve Smith he added a crucial 33 to stabilize the innings, but the rest of the line-up failed against him Mohammed Siraj (3/51) i Prasidh Krishna (3/42), who bowled with precision and discipline. Nitish Kumar Reddy he also chipped in with two wickets, applying pressure in the middle.
India’s second innings unfolded similarly to the first, with the top order collapsing against Boland’s inspired spell. Boland’s remarkable 6/41 dismantled India’s batting line-up as they were bowled out for just 157. While others struggled, Rishabh pants he fought back brilliantly, smashing a 33-ball 61 with six boundaries and four sixes. Their bold strokeplay briefly raised hopes of a competitive total, but a lack of support at the other end meant India could not set a challenging target. Australia’s bowlers, especially Boland, took advantage of the conditions perfectly, leaving India’s batsmen scrambling for answers.
Chasing 162, Australia started confidently, with Usman Khawaja leading the charge. Khawaja’s fluent 41 off 45 balls, along with Travis Head’s unbeaten 34, leveled the innings after Krishna’s early advances. Despite Krishna’s impressive figures of 3/65, Australia’s aggressive approach kept them on track. Key partnerships at crucial times helped the hosts overcome the pressure and by the close of tea on Day 3, they cruised to victory with six wickets in hand. With the momentum fully in their favor after Webster joined Head (39 not out), Australia closed out both the match and the series, leaving India to reflect on missed opportunities and recurring batting struggles.

India lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy BGT to Australia by 1-3.
Had it not been for Jasprit Bumrah (and Yashasvi Jaiswal to some extent), they would have lost the series 0-5. pic.twitter.com/FeBNfDdotU

India’s batsmen did not score enough runs to challenge Australia and so 3-1 is a fair result. Many problems to solve. The form of the senior batsmen, the over-reliance on Bumrah…

What an amazing series. This can only happen if you have two great teams challenging each other. Australia the best side throughout the series!! key moments Too bad it’s over

One has to feel for poor Jasprit Bumrah. Sitting helplessly with his whites on in the SCG dressing room #AusvInd pic.twitter.com/QBnDGaCKZJ

Well directed Pat Cummins!
Came well with the bat under pressure at MCG to give them the lead when it was 1-1 and SCG also gave good support to Boland who did Boland things.
This was a series that this set of Australian players had not won and now they tick that box too.
