Former speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament Andrei Paruba was shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities said.
Police received reports of firing in the area of Frankvili Lviv, Western Ukraine, approximately southern local time on Saturday. It is unclear whether the criminal was arrested.
The 54-year-old Parubiy rose to the framework of the Ukraine movement, which advocated closer ties with the European Union (EU) and beat the pro-Russian former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.
The President of Ukrainian Valodimir Zelensky called it a “terrible murder” and sent his condolences.
It remains unclear who is behind the attack. Confirmed messages suggest that Parubiy was shot dead by an electronic bicycle dressed in the courier.
The National Police of Ukraine, the LVIV regional police and the security service are investigating the murder.
In his statement, Zelensky wrote on the telegram: “The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klimenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko had just reported the first known circumstances of the terrible murder in Lv. Andrebi died. My condolences of their family and friends.
“All the necessary forces and funds are unfolding to investigate and search the killer.”
