European leaders appeared carefully after a virtual meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, two days before he met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss the termination of the war in Ukraine.
It is reported that Trump told Europeans that his goal was to obtain a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.
He also agreed that any territorial issues should be resolved with the participation of VolodyMyr Zelensky, and that security guarantees should be part of the transaction, France Emanuel Macron reports.
Speaking to Trump, he allowed him to “clarify his intentions” and gave the Europeans the opportunity to “express our expectations,” Macron said.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance talked to the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and Poland, as well as EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rute.
The Europeans were canceled from the hastily organized summit in Alaska, and their phone call today was an attempt to preserve Ukraine’s interests and the continent’s security at Trump’s forefront.
To a certain extent, it seemed to work. On Wednesday night, Trump appreciated the “Ten” meeting and stated that Russia would face “very difficult” consequences if it did not stop the war in Ukraine.
He also said that if the meeting was good on Friday, he would try to organize a “fast second” involving Putin and Zelensky.
However, in their statements, European leaders have resumed the need for Kiev to participate in any final decision – by betraying the main nervousness that Putin can eventually convince Trump to yield to Ukrainian land in return for ceasefire.
“The most important thing is that Europe convinces Donald Trump that it is impossible to trust Russia,” said Donald Tusk, while German chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the leaders “made it clear that Ukraine should be at the table as soon as the following meetings are taking place.”
When the Russian side refused and contributed concessions, “then the US and we, Europeans, must and should increase the pressure,” Merz said.
Since the US-Russia summit was announced last week, Trump has made several references to “overcoming land” between Kiev and Moscow-calling serious problems in Ukraine and beyond that it can prepare for Putin’s long-term demand.
On Wednesday morning, the press secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexei Fadeev once again confirmed that Putin had not changed in June 2024 because Putin nominated it in June 2024.
At the time, Putin said that the ceasefire would start from the moment the Ukrainian government abandoned four regions, partly occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye. He also said that Ukraine will have to formally abandon its efforts to join the NATO military alliance.
These are maximalist requirements that neither Kyiv nor its European partners consider viable.
Zelensky said he was convinced that Russia would use any region, he was allowed to be preserved as a bridgehead for future invasions.
The way to resist this threat can be guaranteed security – appointed as commitments to ensure Ukraine’s long -term defense.
The statements issued after a telephone call with Trump, several European leaders stated that such guarantees were mentioned, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that “real progress” was made in this regard.
From spring, the UK and France have been leading the efforts to create a so -called “coalition of those who want” – a group of nations that have pledged to stop Russia from further invasion of Ukraine.
On Wednesday, the group stated that it was “ready to play an active role”, including by deploying “soothing forces when the hostilities stopped” – although the form, composition and role of such force is still unclear.
Meanwhile, Russia’s summer offensive continues to press. Speaking to the sudden promotion of Moscow troops near Dobraplyla, in the region, which is in the combat Datansk, Zelensky said that Putin pretends that the sanctions were not effective in damage to the Russian economy.
“I told Trump and our European allies that Putin is wandering,” the Ukrainian president said, calling them to put “greater pressure” on Russia.
For his part, Trump confessed that even when he meets Putin to face, he may not be able to make him stop killing civilians in Ukraine.
“I had such a conversation with him … But then I go home and see that the rocket hit the nursing home or apartment building, and people lie dead on the street.
“That’s why I guess the answer is probably not.”
