Erik Menendez received a decision following his parole hearing while his brother Lyle’s Fate still hangs in the balance.
Parole was refused to Erik, 54, at his hearing held on Thursday, August 21. Lyle’s hearing will be held on Friday, August 22.
“Although we respect the decision, the result today was of course disappointed and not what we were hoping for,” Menendez family members said in a prepared statement, according to News on Thursday. “But our belief in Erik remains unwavering and we know it will take the board’s recommendation in progress. His repentance, growth, and positive impact he has had on others speak for themselves. We will continue to stand beside him and hold on to the hope that he will be able to return home soon.”
Earlier this week, the brothers’ lawyer, Mark Geragostalk about the parole process on Cuomo Newsnation.

Erik and Lyle admitted to kill their parents, José and Kitty MenendezAt their Beverly Hills Mansion in August 1989 when the siblings were 18 and 21, respectively. Although they claim self-defense because of abuse and fear for their own lives, Erik and Lyle were found guilty of first-degree murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In the midst of new interest in the case following the release of a Netflix’s documentary and series about the brothers, former Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón Recommended Erik and Lyle are re -bodied. The day before the hearings begin, Nathan HochmanAttorney of the current Los Angeles area, he explained his opposition to the release of Erik and Lyle.
“The menendez brothers have never accepted responsibility for the horrific murders of their parents, continuing to promote a false narrative of self-defense rejected by the jury decades ago,” said Hochman in Wednesday, August 20, statement. “We have constantly opposed their release because they have not shown full insight into their crimes or have shown that they have been fully rehabilitated, and therefore continue to pose a risk to society. We will evaluate our last site based on the evidence presented at the hearing.”
Hochman stressed that the regeneration of Erik and Lyle’s media should not affect the Parole Board’s ruling.
“Although recent documentaries and films have highlighted this case, parole decisions must be based solely on the facts and law,” it continued. “This case, like all cases – especially those who charm the public – must be looked at with a critical eye. Justice should never be rocked by glasses.”
