Undefeated IBF world welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis wants to stay at welterweight to unify the titles. The only problem is that the three champions from the other organizations don’t want to join forces against him.
With an unimpressive win, although certainly the winner, you’d think one of the champions would be ready by now. Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing is possibly the busiest promoter in the world. Super welterweight Vergil Ortiz, Jr., 22-0, 21 stops per fight, has been rumored to be on offer. “We were never offered that,” Bozy Ennis said. Ortiz is scheduled to face Israil Madrimov on February 22nd, 10-1-1 with 7 stops from Uzbekistan and California, who is coming off a close loss to Terence Crawford.
Possible Welterweight opponents WBA champion Eimantas Stansonis, 15-0 with 9 shutouts, of Lithuania. “He’s the best of the champions and he’d love this fight,” Bozy Ennis said. Also, WBC Champion Brian ‘The Assassin ll’ Norman, Jr., 26-0 with 20 shutouts from Georgia, and Interim WBC Champion Mario ‘El Azteca’ Barrios, 29-2-1 with 13 shutouts from Texas.
IBF No. 3 welterweight (No. 1 and No. 2 vacant) Jin Sasaki, 18-1-1 with 17 stops from Japan, is scheduled to defend his Asian Boxing Federation titles on January 24 WBO Pacific & Eastern & Pacific vs. Shoki ‘ELPV’ Sakai , 29-14-3 with 15 saves from Japan.
If Ennis makes weight, he could face WBO champion Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora, 21-1-1 with 13 stops from California. “He’s an inside fighter, even though he’s 6’05,” Bozy Ennis said, “and that’s why they beat him.”
Adding, “his sister can really fight.” IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, 23-0 with 17 shutouts from Russia and California, and former two-division WBA Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, 41-0 with 31 shutouts from Nebraska. None have a fight scheduled. At 37, Crawford is looking for a big payday before he retires, and Alvarez can make that happen.
