England’s pattern, Leah Williamson, has expressed his support for Mary Earps after the retirement of the goalkeeper from international football.
Earps, who recently joined Paris Saint-Germain, confirmed that he would no longer play England on Tuesday, just over a month before the 2025 euro begins.
The time of the announcement caused some criticism, but when asked if he saw the Earps’s decision as a selfish, Williamson defended the election of his friend.
“I think reaching this decision must be one of the hardest things in your career,” said Williamson.
“She is a first human and I hope Maria is fine and that she is the best decision for her. We will miss her.”
Williamson, fresh to lift the female champions’ league trophy with Arsenal last Saturday, also shared the proximity to his ears and off the pitch.
“I talked to Mary, it’s one of my friendly friends, so I’m devastated, just because I love her, I love being her teammate,” he added.
“I think the way the England shirt is wearing an example for all, so I’m really sad that these memories do not continue with a England T -shirt.

“But for her, she thinks this is the best, and I will always support her in this.”
Titular coach Sarina Wiegman also headed for the Earps, admitting that she was “really disappointed and sad” by the decision.
She added: “This must have been a very difficult decision for her and, therefore, it is for us.
“Of course, I have a couple of conversations that I do not want to share here because there is between us. It is difficult, it costs a lot and it is difficult for her at the same time.
“He has done such a great job for England. He has made a massive difference and so far we have had an incredible trip. I really love it.
“It is emotional because we also have a relationship and we have had such a massive journey along with many highs and, of course, also a few lows.
“This is what makes it very difficult. But we have to move on and now we do not have time to celebrate -because we go to euros.”
Earps concludes his career in England with 53 appearances over eight years.
He was part of the teams that raised the euros trophy of 2022 and the female final of 2023, and also helped England in the final of the World Cup last year.
