At least 11 people have been killed and five injured after they fled rumors of a fire on board their train in India only to be hit by another train.
Railway officials said passengers had disembarked from the Mumbai-bound train in the western state of Maharashtra after someone pulled an emergency cord, causing it to stop.
They were hit by a train on a nearby track. While it was not immediately clear whether there really was a fire.
In recent years, India has launched a $30m (£24bn) program to upgrade its railways, but it has been marred by a series of accidents, including 2023 major three train disaster in Odisha state resulting in the death of about 300 people.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a message on X that he was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life” in the incident near Pachora in Jalgaon district, about 400 km from Mumbai, India’s financial capital.
He said eight ambulances had been dispatched and hospitals were on standby.
The disaster will be seen as a setback for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has called for rail upgrades to boost the economy and connectivity.
Next month’s budget plans to increase spending on the program, Reuters reports.
