Promoter Eddie Hearn says that Hamzah Sheeraz’s best hope to beat Super Middleweight Contender Edgar Berlanga dragged him in the second half in his confrontation on July 12 Dazn PPV.
Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 kos) debuted in 168 against Slugger Berlanga (23-1, 18 kos) next month in his 12-round holder at the Turki Alralikh event at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
“I feel that Hamzah Sheeraz moved to 168, will really help him. Hamzah has a very good IQ,” said Eddie Hearn to Dazn boxPreviewing the ex -month struggle next month between Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz in Queens, New York.
Spending until 168 will make Sheeraz’s life even more difficult because it will no longer have the size and advantage of the power he had at 160 against the ham and the Eggers that his promoter had been coinciding with him in his first days.
“It’s a risky struggle for the first struggle in 168? Very much (for Sheeraz). Edgar is very heavy, it is very explosive and what Edgar does, if he has enough confidence, is to throw in you. He is happy to change with you. Hamzah can also hit Hearn.
Sheeraz’s power can be the only one who can save him in this struggle because if he does not exchange with Berlanga, he will be reduced to meteor dust. This struggle has an early tie written everywhere.
“What is my concern is, Edgar has his hands quite quick in exchange and I think Hamzah has to be very careful in the fight, not to be carried away at the moment and simply reveal -to lose the shape and only to exchange with Edgar because Edgar has a lot of power.”
If Hamzah does not exchange with Berlanga to win -he will be eliminated immediately. Against a great punch like Edgar, you have no choice because he is a tie artist who goes to the slaughter immediately.
“I think Edgar’s confidence is now high. He fought against Canelo Alvarez,” said Hearn. “I thought I could have done much more in this struggle, but I think it also has confidence,” I felt power. I felt the experience. “
The way Berlanga fought in the last rounds against Canelo and his victory in the first round about Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz on March 15, did much for his confidence. Sheeraz has chosen the wrong time to fight against Berlanga.
“ You saw in your next struggle with an easy opponent (Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz). I think you have to make Edgar the favorite in this struggle, but Hamzah Sheeraz has all the shots if you can get the right play plan with (new coach) Andy Lee, who also formed Jason Quigley, who fought against Edgar Belanga a couple of fights (in 2023). “He succeeded in this struggle (Note: Berlanga fell quigley four times).
I have no idea what Hearn speaks here. Quigley was a zero success against Berlanga in this fight in 2023. Berlanga fell Quigley in rounds 3, 5 and twice in round 12. The only one that was positive that Jason did in this struggle was to survive and he had great heavy punishment. Apart from that, everything was Berlanga.
“Therefore, it is a great party. If you have a choice in New York, with impetus, you probably go with Edgar Berlanga, but Hamzah Sheeraz is very alive in this struggle,” said Hearn. “Edgar is aggressive early. If you could get cold and be caught by Edgar Berlanga, you have problems. For me, after five or six rounds, Hamzah could become the favorite in this struggle.”
Berlanga is dangerous even in the subsequent rounds. It does not lose power as their fights progress. We saw that in his fight against Canelo Alvarez last September, when Edgar disembarked his best shots at the twelfth round, making life and looking at the end. It was fresh and even more dangerous in that round than at the beginning of the fight.
“The danger to Hamzah Sheeraz is the first exchanges, which is cold for a great punch. Yes, I think Hamzah has no experience at this level. In his latest World Title Fight (WBC Middleweight), he did not really show himself (against champion Carlos Adames on February 22),” said Hearn. “I know he hurt his hand in the fight. I think 160 must have been killed too.”
Hearn does not point out that Hamzah deserved a loss in that struggle to Riyadh and was saved by the crew of judges, which gave him a draw to 12 rounds. I saw the struggle and had it for the Adames 11-1. It was a complete mismatch. Sheeraz reminded some fans of Amir Khan with their weak resistance to the punch and the way he would be pressured.
“Only the experience of fighting world class opposition. Hamzah is a compound man, I think if he can do a great performance, he has a shot,” said Hearn.
It is not good for Sheeraz to go against Berlanga in his first fight in 168 after losing possibly to Carlos Adames last February. As Hearn points out, Sheeraz’s best hope is to drag Berlanga in the second half of the contest, and then we hope that he will be enough to get a stop. I don’t see it happening, but this is the only one shot I can see to win Sheeraz.
