Growing up, I fell in love with movies and shows that were inspired directly by the famous 1940s and 1950s EC comics. Creepshow is my favorite horror movie ever approved by Halloween, and I have many fond memories of laughing with my dad as we watch episodes of Stories from the crypt. I even traced Amicus anthology movies when I was a teenager.
But, I never grew up reading the EC comics of these movies and showed a loving paid homage to or even used as a source material. I only managed until my adulthood The Vault of Horror. Destination of Fear. Shock Suspenstories, and many others. I never fell too deeply for those comics, but I’m here to sing the praises of the CE comics recipient that shows how you should revive a classic concept.
The Spirit is alive, but these are not old spirits
The CE comics brand was revived by Uns Press in 2024. Instead of depending on the identifiable titles of the EC or reusing the same host characters from Stories from the crypt And his companion comics, the great decision was made to think about new titles and new host characters.
Instead of Stories from the crypt With the Crypt Keeper, the first title would be Epitaphs from the Abyss And the horror force of this flag would be the grave digger. As the comic progresses, we are introduced to other fresh fiends who are ready to be Emcees: The Tormentor and Serious Investigator.
What I love about this decision is that it actually makes an artistic debate over a new reef on these properties. So much restart culture ends like an empty shell of the thing He wants to re -grip. With the re -horror of the CE Comics, the main creative people behind these comics have taken advantage of the right way to tackle a new old idea.
Make something new out of something old
The CE Comics brand rechargement made the decision to create new titles for a variety of anthology comics. As such, it also means that they are not seen to any previous concepts from the EC Comics Library. While their titles are like A cruel universe and A cruel kingdom are spiritual successors to old CE titles as The science of strange and Strange fantasyThis new age is allowed to create its own unique identity.
And it’s the best kicker of them all: it leads to a little narrative fun with the horror titles. At the end of Epitaphs from the Abyss #12 (which has an amazing shark story for you Dangerous animals Fans), the grave tactile is buried alive by the serious torment and investigator! Oh, he still kicked around, but led to the end of Epitaphs from the Abyss and start Catacomb tumbling. I’m sure you can guess which character takes over maintenance duties for that one.
The horror of an anthology is my favorite genre in all the fiction and it is refreshing to see the EC Comics Horror Spirit alive again without having to re -consider past bodies. I wish that more resumes could formulate a dish such as these comics instead of the reassignment excess we get.
