Drag Race’s Tyra Sanchez Cried for ‘The Vivienne’ Death Joke


Beloved Drag Queen James Lee Williams, Known as 'The Vivienne', Dies at 32

RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Tyra Sanchez has been criticized for making a joke about the death oh James Lee Williamsbetter known as The Vivienne.

The backlash was sparked when Tyra, formerly known as King Tyra and who had his birth name James Rosshe took to X on Sunday, January 5, in response to a 2020 tweet by The Vivienne that discussed Tyra, 36. Tyra’s joke was posted the same day as The Vivienne’s death confirm from their manager, Simon Jonesvia Instagram.

Vivienne’s tweet in 2020 read, “Bet Tyra was freaking out when she realized Netflix ruined the win too. Sorry gal. But you tried,” to which Tyra replied on Sunday, “Still it doesn’t compare to the fumes of the crematorium.”

Fellow drag queen Kandy Musehis real name is Kevin Gabriel Candalario, he responded to Tyra’s post, “I’ve protected you for years but now you can go completely f— yourself and if our paths ever cross it’s totally sane, it’s not a threat, it’s a promise you disgusting person.”

Another X user said, “You’re disgusting… Shame on you,” while another wrote, “this was twisted. As someone who used to admire you, this is so cold and disappointing.”

The widespread criticism did nothing to dampen Tyra’s stance, however, as Tyra posted later that night, “She’s dead. Decay Sending me all the hate in the world won’t bring her back. But do as you must. Because of you the tweet has reached over 25k individuals. Thank you for the attention I desperately needed.”

Vivienne’s death surprised fans of the show who had followed the drag queen’s career path closely after they won the opening game. Drag Race UK Series in 2019. Jones’ Instagram announcement on Sunday read, “It is with tremendous sadness that we let you know that our beloved James Lee Williams — The Vivienne, passed this weekend. James was a very lovely, warm and wonderful person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle.” Vivienne was 32 years old.

The cause of death has not yet been revealed.

In a follow-up statement regarding The Vivienne’s death, also shared via Jones’ Instagram account, Jones shared a more personal response to the news, writing that The Vivienne was more than a client – they were a friend.
