President Donald Trump said he believes that the United States will receive control over Greenland after the recent weeks have been interested in acquiring the autonomous territory of Denmark.
“I think we will succeed,” he told reporters on Air Force One on Saturday, adding that 57,000 island residents “want to be with us”.
His comments appeared after reports that Denmark Prime Minister Metete Frederiksen insisted that Greenland was not sold in a hot telephone conversation with the president last week.
Trump has highlighted the prospect of buying a huge area of the Arctic during its first term in 2019 and stated that US control over Greenland is an “absolute need” for international security.
“I think people want to be with us,” Trump said, answering a question about the island in a spokesman aboard the presidential plane.
“I really do not know what claims have before this, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they did not allow it to happen because it is for the protection of the free world,” he added.
“I think we will get Greenland because it is due to the freedom of the world,” Trump continued.
“It has nothing to do with the United States except that we can provide freedom. They can’t. “
Despite Trump’s obvious confidence, Prime Ministers of Greenland and Denmark have previously stated that the island was not sold.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said the use of land of this territory is a “Greenland case”, although he expressed his readiness more closely cooperate with the US on protection and mining.
Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Frederiks has earlier this month that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” and only the local population can determine its future.
Frederixen confirmed her position in a hot 45-minute telephone conversation with Trump last week, According to a report in Financial Times.
The newspaper quotes an anonymous European official, who said the conversation was “terrible” and the other said that Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland was “serious and potentially very dangerous.”
The Prime Minister of Denmark was reported to have insisted that the island was not sold, but noted that the United States is “great interest” for it.
Greenland is on the shortest way from North America to Europe, making it strategically important for the US. There is also a large American space complex.
In recent years, interest in Greenland’s natural resources, including the production of rare -earth minerals, uraniums and iron.
Although the island has extensive autonomy, it remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
But Greenland has a common consensus that it will eventually become independent, which can pave the way to a new type of relations with the United States.
Are in several ways President Trump can realize his desire to seize the territory. Earlier in January, when asked if he could exclude the use of military or economic force, Trump replied that he could not.
