Devin Haney will work out in front of his British fans today at an open practice at 2pm in London, England. He doesn’t have a fight scheduled.
Haney in London: looking for momentum in the UK
It’s a strange move by Dev because he’s not fighting a Brit; he is coming off an embarrassing loss and his stock is low. He seems desperate to make this move, but it shows where he is in his career.
It will be bad for Haney if few fans and members of the media show up to watch him train. However, there will probably be a fair amount of British media turning up so they can get an interview.
Some believe this move is to build Haney’s brand overseas in hopes of being picked by Turki Al-Shiekh to fight on one of his Riyadh season cards. By training in London, former two-division world champion Devin will gain exposure from the British press and potentially be noticed by Turki.
If he wants to add Devin to one of his cards, he could face him against a formidable opponent, such as Richardson Hitchins, Liam Paro, or Jaron Ennis. It’s doubtful that Haney would agree to fight any of these guys because he wouldn’t want to risk his rematch with Ryan Garcia.
Haney’s A-list status lost
In the US, Haney’s stock has plummeted due to the combination of his loss to Ryan Garcia and his decision to file a lawsuit and sit out of the ring for a year, without fighting. The way his career looks now, it doesn’t look good to him.
He is no longer an A-list fighter due to this loss, and his chances of returning to his former high-status spot are slim. There is no weak champion like the ones Haney beat to capture his two division world titles.
