Shortly after Derrick Harmon drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers, announced that his mother died as he was left reflecting on his inheritance.

According to Harmon, his mother had previously suffered a stroke when he was a student at the University of Michigan in 2021.

“I sat down with my mother and had a discussion,” he remembered ESPN in a profile broadcast on Thursday. “She told me that every decision I made up to this point was for her and it’s time to make a decision for myself.”
When Harmon got the call from the Steelers, he noted that Saine would be excited to him.
“She is currently in hospital on life maintenance, so that was a bit bitter because she worked just as hard as me to reach this moment,” Harmon told reporters on Thursday. “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I’m very excited. After I got off the phone with you, I’m going to go straight to hospital and tell her that her son was drafted.”
According to Harmon, his mother was his greatest motivation for a long time.
