Earlier this week, the entertainment community was shocked by the surprise death David Lynch. As fans and collaborators of the Twin Peaks creatures remember himhis family and the Criterion Channel want to help with this in their individual ways.
For Criterion, this means making the David Lynch: The Life free documentary streaming in the US, with or without a subscription, until January 31st. Released in 2016, The Life covers the late filmmaker’s life up to this point, from his childhood and time as an art school painter to the start of production on his debut film in 1977, Eraserhead. If you have a sub Criterion, that documentary should not be the end of it: the service also includes several Lynch films in its catalog as Eraserhead, Inland Empire, and lost road, plus related documentaries, on-set footage, and “hours of interviews with the man himself and his key collaborators.” You can view the Criterion Lynch playlist here.
In addition, the children of David Lynch – Jennifer, Austin, Riley and Luna – have invited fans to join them in a 10-minute worldwide group meditation at 12 PM PT tomorrow, January 20th. That would have marked his 79th birthday, and the four children hope that this will serve as a “celebration of his life. David was a guiding light of creativity, love and peace. (…) Let’s gather, everywhere, to honor his legacy spreading peace and love to the world. Please take this time to meditate, reflect, and send positivity into the universe.”
If you happen to live in LA, there is another way to remember David Lynch: visit Bob’s oldest childthe diner where he had lunch every day at 2:30 PM for seven consecutive years. It was there where he took a photo with director John Waters, made a “chemistry lunch” for the future Tops stars Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan, and he was there, writing several ideas on dinner napkins. Since the news of his death, the unique Burbank location has received many visitors, and his five-foot statue of Big Boy is currently a altar full of messages and photos from those who have connected with his work.
