Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy He acknowledged the role of his company in spreading rumors of deceitful cheating about Ole Miss College’s new man.
During an interview with Tom Llamas on NBC Night News Thursday, April 10, Portnoy was asked, 48, what would he like to say to a family Mary Kate Cornett After multiple barstal workers posted on social media about The allegation that Cornett is asleep with her boyfriend’s father.
“We will apologize,” said Portnoy. “I get why the family pissed. I’m sad and I wish we wouldn’t play any part in it.”
According to NBC News, Portnoy works for “Barstool editorial standards.”
As for the Barstool workers who posted for the viral rumor relating to Cornett, which were not specifically named, Portnoy called them “very silly.”
“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” added Portnoy. “I thought it was obviously a fake story. I thought we were better than that.”
Portnoy said his lawyers had been in contact with Cornett’s lawyers as they tried to steer a way forward.
“I think they offered a mediation pathway or legal case route,” explained Portnoy. “I think we’re going to try to mediate. I don’t know what we did legally wrong. That’s a bit different. Moral, we were wrong.”
The rumor for Cornett – which she has called “false,” is “unforgivable” and “annoying” – also sPread thanks to ESPN personality Pat McAfeewho discussed him flopping on an episode of Pat McAfee Show in February.
Since then Cornett and her family have threatened a legal proceedings against McAfee and ESPN.
During a live show in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, April 9, McAfee spoke about his “current position” For the first time.
“I have a lot of people saying I should be sued,” said McAfee. “I want to say this: I never want to be part of anything negative in anyone’s life, never. That’s not what I want to do.”
McAfee, who comes from the Pittsburgh area, said, “You f *** ing know that Pittsburgh lawyers are my lawyers and they are here tonight.”
He added, “They have a room here that I have certainly contributed to. They have the same mindset as me, empathy but understand reality. For all that is happening, I didn’t want to add more negativity as it was happening.”
Dave Portnoy has had a lot of success – and some lumps in the way – in building his financial empire. Portnoy founded Barstool Sports in 2003 as a weekly print announcement. McAfee called the fall from spreading the rumor as a “terrible situation” and promised to make “some sort of silver lining” out of the scandal.
“You can get that promise from me,” he said. “It won’t be so impossible to be my fan going forward.”
Earlier this month Cornett told The athletic About how her life had been flipped upside down as a result of the rumor – and promised to take legal action.
“I would like people to be held accountable for what they have done,” said Cornett. “You ruin my life by talking about it on your free show but comment, but I waited up to 5 in the morning, every night, throwing up, not eating because I’m so anxious about what is going to happen for the rest of my life.”
