Dave Chappelle’s Comic Hits Netflix’s New Trans Joke Special: ‘It’s Not Funny, It’s Dangerous’

Comedian Michel Bouteau Dave Chappelle burst out for cashing in on “unfunny” and “dangerous” jokes about the transgender community in his successful Netflix specials.

Bhutto hosted her own comedy special, Michelle Bhutto: A Mind Full of Bhutto at Radio City Music Hall, which premiered on Netflix on Tuesday. During the act, she openly joked about her “beautiful black lesbian friend,” which she said was an example of a respectful way to refer to the LGBTQ community.

“I say it can be done. It can be done. We can tell jokes and stories instead of demeaning the whole community,” Bhutto said. “We can make it, we can make it funny. You just have to work at it, right?

“So if you guys ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know what the f— is? I don’t think he knows what the f— is.”

“I don’t think we’ll run into Dave because he’s the GOAT. And he’s a GOAT if that means “talking about trans people”.

“Dave, this is not funny. This is dangerous,” she continued. “I can’t believe that someone can make millions and millions of dollars making people feel unsafe. It’s really that wild for me.”

Buteau stated: “I’m showing it off…tonight. It’s taking over Radio City Music Hall, and I’m going to tell everybody that I want to make millions and millions of dollars making people feel safe, seen, safe, heard and entertained.”

Speaking to USA Today in the special, Bhutto also referenced Chapelle’s comments and emphasized the importance of community support.

“I’m not saying you can’t say something, I’m just saying, ‘Can you make it funny?’ Because it’s not funny,” Bhutto added. “You hurt people and you do it dangerously. And it’s not just about Chappelle, it’s a part of the culture that I don’t understand.

“When people say, ‘We can’t do what we used to do.’ Yes! Slavery used to be legal, you guys need to move on and I apologize if it’s different, but look into it.

In 2021, Chappelle found himself in hot water for making transgender jokes in his Netflix special, The Closer. Trans activists called on Netflix to drop the program, along with a small group of Netflix employees held a demonstration in protest.

In 2023, he continued to do jokes about transsexuals in his special The Dreamer when he talked about visiting Jim Carrey on the set of his 1999 film Man in the Moon.

Carrey took a methodical approach to portraying real-life comedian Andy Kaufman, staying in character throughout, and the crew instructed Chappelle to refer to Carrey as “Andy” when he met him.

“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey, and I had to pretend all day that this n— was Andy Kaufman. And he was clearly Jim Carrey. I could look at him and see that he was Jim Carrey,” he noted. “Anyway, I’m saying all this to say that trans people make me feel this way.”
