D. Wayne Lukash, the legendary coach of the horses, dead in 89, says family

The legendary horse coach D. Wayne Lukasz died, his family said on Sunday. He was 89.

Lucas recently was hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused serious damage to his heart and digestive system. The disease has deteriorated previously chronic conditions.

“Wayne devoted his life not only to horses, but also by industry – developing generations of riders and equestrian people and growing the game, inviting unsuspecting fans to the winners circle,” his family said.

“Can he boast a 2-year-old girl as the next Derby winner in Kentucky or offered quiet words tips before the big race, Wayne brought his heart, grace and fall into every corner of the sport. His last days were held at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family and faith.”

He won 15 triple crown races, including four Kentucky races.
