Cyclone Garance kills three when it is gone through the island of Reunion

Three people were killed during a reunion after cyclone Horans swept across the French Indian Ocean with gusts up to 234 km/h (145 km/h).

The tropical cyclone left more than 180,000 houses without electricity and 170,000 without running water after the incident on Friday morning.

The entire population of the remote island – including emergency services and police – was ordered to remain indoors as the maximum alert level was introduced.

Heavy rains are expected to continue on Friday night, with Prime Minister François Bayra a warning on x that cyclone remained a threat.

Garans concluded in the north reunion at 10:00 local time (06:00 GMT) before sweeping south and leave the island until late, the Meteo France weather reports.

Local authorities have reduced the alert by noon to allow emergency services and police to leave shelters.

The island did not record the top wind speed of 234 km/h since Cyclone Hollanda in February 1994.

Vincent Claine, 45, resident of the northern coast of the island, told AFP news agency: “This is the first time I saw the cyclone of this powerful and the first time I feared.”

About 100 troops and firefighters were in standby to be shipped from the French territory of Meta nearly 1500 km (930 miles) when the conditions were softened, as well as 100 from mainland France.

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man went missing in nearby Mauritius on Wednesday after swimming in rough seas.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retal said on Friday that Garan was a “rare intensity”, while the Defense Minister Sebastien Locorna said the armed forces were ready to assist.
