According to Michigan University Michigan, US consumers are becoming more worried that tariffs will increase inflation overview released on Friday.

Consumer mood index decreased to 50.8, which decreased compared to 52.2 in April, in previous reading for May. This is the second least reading on the record, behind June 2022.

The pricing forecast also moved in the wrong direction. Last month, inflation expectations a year increased to 7.3% with 6.5%, while long -term inflation expectations increased to 4.6% with 4.4%.

However most polls have been completed before the US and China announced 90-day pause about most tariffs between the two countries. The trading situation appears to be a key factor that weighs on consumer mood.

“The tariffs spontaneously mentioned nearly three quarters of consumers, which compared to almost 60% in April; uncertainty in trade policy continues to dominate consumers,” said consumer Director Joanna KSA.

Inflation expectations are closely monitored by investors and politicians. The chairman of the federal reserve system Jerome Powell said the Central Bank wants to make sure that long-term inflation expectations do not grow because of the tariffs before resuming the rate.

Even with pauses for imports of imports against China and other countries, an effective tariff rate for the goods in the US is still much higher than the inauguration of President Donald Trump in January. Economists on both sides of the passage are mainly agreed that tariffs can lead to short -term prices, although the degree of this growth and whether it will nurture long -term inflation remains unclear.

Recent inflation data did not show the tariff cones because both Consumer Price Index And the manufacturer’s price index on April came below the consensus estimate.

The final consumer mood index is planned to be released on May 30, and it will probably be carefully watched to find out whether the pause will be paused.
