I’m a huge horror fiend, but there are two things that usually keep me from watching a scary movie: bad reviews and a bad cover. Unfortunately, the 2015 Olaf’s daughter suffers from both, which is why I continue to ignore the film no matter how many times my various algorithms shove it in my face. I finally caved and watched this movie for free on Tubi, and I’m happy to report that despite what the haters say, this is almost one. perfect a horror film.
There is a cast of Olaf’s daughter is pretty slim, but has some pretty big names in it, including Abigail Breslin (best known for Little Miss Sunshine) as the titular final girl and Wes Bentley (best known for American beauty a Interstellar) as his no-nonsense coach. She is trained by a mysterious organization that gives her James Bond level skills to help her kill bad guys. In this film, the bad guys in question are a quartet of murderous guys led by a charismatic sociopath (Alexander Ludvig, best known for The Hunger Games and the Vikings TV show).
Although it’s not for everyone, I loved it Olaf’s daughter for its lean storytelling, including the fact that we don’t get many exact details about who this mysterious organization is, what it’s for, or even the exact year this period piece takes place. This is the ultimate “show, don’t tell” horror film, and that’s only fitting because of director Tyler Shields. Shields is really a photographer, and to his credit, he infuses every frame of the film with a signature style, one that finds the balance between the artistic excess of Zack Snyder and the artful minimalism of Jim Jarmusch.
If you like horror movies, you might enjoy how Olaf’s daughter subverts expectations in the fine tradition of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The bad guys are a quartet of young killers whose serious gimmick involves choosing an unsuspecting target, taking her to the woods, and revealing their plan to hunt her down and kill her while wearing tuxedos. They intend for Breslin’s character to be their next target, not knowing that she has spent her entire life training to kill these types of scumbags in the most brutally creative ways.
The film is just as creative, but it can be hard to appreciate unless you look past its very trope-y design. It’s basically the classic revenge story with a twist where the potential victim is ready to turn the tables, a bit like what you’d get if Buffy Summers hunted human monsters instead of non-human ones die Despite some very familiar tropes on display, this film’s dialogue is brilliant, the cinematography is stunning, and the kills are unpredictable and satisfying, making this one film that is more than the sum of its trope-y parts.
Unfortunately, not everyone appreciated Olaf’s daughter almost as much when it came out (first through a limited theatrical release and then through video on demand). Ar Rotten tomatoesthe film currently has a critical score of 25 percent, though only from 12 critics. And although every fan-boy likes to say that the critics have done their favorite films dirty, this is one case where most of the critics were wrong, complaining that things like the plot was basic and the film too violent What did they expect from a horror movie?
It is true that Olaf’s daughter not going to blow your mind with an elaborate plot out of a Chris Nolan movie, but I argue that the best slasher movies are the ones that stick to the classic formula of movies like Friday the 13th while still managing to surprise us with a few unexpected twists and turns. That’s exactly what it is Olaf’s daughter it takes the formula of hunting down and killing innocent victims in the forest but makes those victims potential victims. The result is the rare horror film where we can root for the brutal killer while she’s busy murdering some of the absolute worst people.
Will you find Olaf’s daughter as thrilling as I did, or do you agree with the critics that this attempt to break the art does not strike the cinematic artery? The only way to find out is to stream it for free on Tubi. I’ll leave you with a simple reminder that I wish someone had shared with me when this movie came out in 2015: it’s a lot, a lot better than his awful cover would suggest.
