Christie Brinkley details the highs and lows of her most famous marriage in the past – to Billy Joel – In her recollection of newly released Uptown girl.
“I like to say I have two big marriages (Joel and Jean-François Allaux) and two duds (Richard Taubman and Peter Cook), ”Quoted Brinkley, 71, to Weekly US When promoting the book alone, released on Tuesday, April 29. “I would probably have to say (Joel) was the love of my life because he was the first person I got my baby with.
The iconic supermodel and musician married for nine years Between 1985 and 1994. They share a girl, Alexa Ray Joel, born in December 1985. Despite their divorce, the two have remained friends.
“The whole thing was amazing,” said Brinkley Us for her magical NYC marriage to Joel, which is displayed in Uptown girl. “We had decided to get married on a ship in New York harbor.

Brinkley wrote that her relationship with Joel “changed my life was irreversible” before detailing on the first time they met in January 1983 during a trip to St. Barts.
“Immediately, I found Billy charming and very funny as he cracked jokes for his ‘tanning’ and made other funny and dear self-valuing comments,” Brinkley wrote. “When he first introduced himself, offering his hand to make my acquaintance, I gave a funny insight on either side of him – I wasn’t sure if his name was Billy Joe or Billy Joel, and didn’t want to insult him, I decided to play it safely.”
Initially, Brinkley only wanted to be friends with Joel “Forever.” They officially started dating in April 1983.
Joel took to Brinkley to see A small shop of horrors Off Broadway in NYC for their first date. The second was in a Beach Boys concert.
“As soon as Billy and I started so far, flowers began to arrive daily in my apartment, and if he had ever lost a day, I would get two arrangements the next day,” he remembered. “Not only flowers and cards, Billy gave me funny little cakes and songs too, not all of them sang.”
Elsewhere in the book, Brinkley revealed that Joel bought her a horse called Belle Star for Christmas after they engaged in August 1984.
The couple at the time filmed the legendary music video “Uptown Girl” six months in their relationship-A No, the song wasn’t really about Brinkley.
Unlike what many people think, Billy didn’t write the shot about me – at least, not initially, he wrote, noting that the tune was more of a “fantasy” at the beginning.
“The whole thing was so much fun,” said Brinkley Us Only, remembering that they filmed on “the hottest night of the whole summer.”
Brinkley wrote about one night in 1986 when she woke up alone in their bed in their Montauk home, NY and Joel was nowhere to be found. He called “every local bar” until Joel was found.
“He was not dead. He was not hurt. And he had not even left Montauk for God knowing where,” he wrote. “He just got drunk. And I felt I was left, which is a horrible feeling.”
They had a big battle when he arrived home. And the same thing started to happen more than once.
“Brad Frank Billy changed in indelible ways,” wrote Brinkley. “He became dark, pulled back, and emphasized as he tried to pump more hits to regain his financial losses while drinking more – much more.”
She was referring to Frank WeberManager Joel and “allegedly sipped more than $ 30 million” by the singer over the years. (Prosecuted Joel Weber in 1989, winning $ 2 million in partial award the following year. He was eventually settled in 1993.)
After the incident, Brinkley remembered “some Jarring’s events” in her relationship with Joel, including one night at an NYC restaurant where she and their daughter left to drink at a bar next door.
There were reports that Joel had cheated on Brinkley during their wedding, who denied.
“Because I wanted to do things to work desperately, I refused to think about it now, choosing to believe it,” he wrote. This topic came up again, which caused a huge blow between the previous couple.
“An Australian friend called to tell me, slowly and dissatisfied, that she had seen an article in Melbourne paper with pictures of Billy out romantic with an Australian actress,” she wrote. (He denied her and she “always” believed him.)
Then Brinkley called Joel and told him to find a different place to sleep. She returned to the hotel where they were staying drunk the same night and tried to enter their room.
“When I didn’t answer, he did something unimaginable: Chaise Longue got up and threw it right through the patio doors, smashing the glass into a million pieces,” he wrote. “Although I couldn’t believe that I was literally running away from the guy I loved so much, I didn’t want to see him like that – and I certainly didn’t want our daughter to see him like that.”
As things started to get worse, Brinkley eventually asked a divorce in 1993 because his drinking became “other women” in their marriage.
“To be clear, I never wanted to end things with Billy,” he explained. “I did everything for our wedding, constantly working to make myself, our home, and everything around us into whatever he might want or hope for. I continually told him how much I loved, making sure he always feels worshiped and appreciated, because he is.”
Brinkley knew things between her and Billy were over following her plane crash in 1994. She went to Colorado – where the accident happened – “like a knight in bright armor.”
“In that moment, I thought my prince finally saved me, and I waited for Billy to say the words I so badly wanted to hear: ‘I almost lost you, I couldn’t live without you, I love you,’” he remembered. During their flight back home, he made a phone call from the plane that Brinkley was probably not to be heard.
“I was very awake when I heard him say the words I never wanted to hear: ‘No, don’t worry. I don’t go back to it. I need to see her through this.’ And just like that, the dream broke apart as debris, ”he wrote.
