Christie Brinkley remembers falling “desperate in love” with Billy Joel In her upcoming biography, Uptown girl.
While describing their first meeting in a Motel Bar Plumbing St. Barts in 1983, Brinkley, 71, Joel, 75, noted, “definitely don’t look like a rock star” is PeopleExcept for the book.
“The man was burned to crisps, his face the same color as cranberries and without oil, he was undoubtedly layered to relieve the burn, with what I like to call the ‘long island bubble:’ carapace of curly curly hair that is popular in the 1980s in parts of a new York suburb.
Brinkley, who wasn’t sure to start his name was Billy Joel or Billy Joe, remembering the pair laughing “so you couldn’t believe” during their hurricane romance.
Billy Joel and former wife of Christie Brinkley have remained on good terms in the years after their divorce. The former tied the knot in March 1985, welcoming Alexa’s daughter that December. “But it was also so sensitive and did all the old-fashioned things, the flowers, notes and poems and songs,” he wrote. “He was entering the recording studio and he wrote all these songs and said ‘This is for you.’ How could I fall in love with him?
Brinkley shared that she and Joel had coined nicknames for each other – “Bada Bing” and “Bada Boom” – because they were “like teenagers falling in love.” He added, “We were suddenly groping and stumbling and dropping things.”
Brinkley also remembered their elaborate dishes, writing, “We were the largest, largest Italians making Italian food. Si, Christie…. And then we would start dancing.”
The model and Joel the knot tied in 1985 and a welcome girl Alexa Later that year. After nearly a decade of marriage, Brinkley and Joel divorced in 1994.

“To be clear, I never wanted to end things with Billy,” he wrote. “But his drinking was bigger than both of us.”
Now, when reflecting at the end of their romance, Brinkley added, “In the end, when the relationship is no longer implementing the way you want it to be – that’s the worst kind of loneliness because you can’t make it work together and that’s painful.”
Brinkley – who went on to marry Richard Taubman in 1994 (calling him quitting in 1995) and Peter Cook In 1996 – she shared that she and Joel had remained friends over the years, calling their relationship “great.” (Brinkley is also the mother of Jack’s son, which she welcomed and Taubman in 1995 and a sailor’s daughter, which she and Cook welcome in 1998. Joel, for his part, is the father of della daughters, 9, and Remy, 7, which he shares with his wife Alexis Roderick.)
”He lives mainly in Florida so we don’t see him as much as when he lived in Sag Harbor, but when he comes over to see Alexa, he will come in and say hello,” he noted.
In terms of reading Joel’s new book, Brinkley shared, “Alexa described him and is like, ‘Sounds good, no problem.'”
