ChatGPT’s new feature allows users to assign characteristics such as “chatty” and “Gen Z”

Update: OpenAI officially announced this feature a week after some users reported its arrival, and then disappearanceof the new options. It is possible that they went to life prematurely.

OpenAI introduces a new way for users to personalize their interactions with ChatGPTthe company’s AI-powered chatbot.

On Friday, OpenAI announced a new user interface for ChatGPT’s custom instructions menu is launched, including new ways to customize the chatbot’s features. The feature will first roll out to ChatGPT.com and the Windows desktop app, according to OpenAI, and will come to the mobile and MacOS desktop app in the coming weeks.

The new UI will not be immediately available to ChatGPT users in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, OpenAI said in a tweet on friday

Some users on X reported last week that ChatGPT exists personalized instructions menu on the web has been renewed with new fields. Now, users can specify a preferred name or nickname, their profession, other things they want ChatGPT to know about them, and “traits” they want the chatbot to have. OpenAI suggests traits like “Chatty,” “Encouraging,” and “Gen Z.”

It is important to note that this is not related to ChatGPT memory feature, which allows users to explicitly tell ChatGPT to remember – or forget – something. Confusingly, ChatGPT ‘memories’ can be personal data – but they can also cover a wider range of information relevant to the conversation.

“Sign up to get better and more personalized answers,” reads a message on the refreshed menu.

The options do not appear for this reporter. TechCrunch has reached out to OpenAI for comment and will update this article if we hear back.

It is likely that the new menu is more of an aesthetic makeover than a deep technical update. The old custom instruction feature used what is known as engineering ready to drive the style and tone of ChatGPT. Essentially, he “primed” the AI powering ChatGPT with a paragraph of user-supplied instructions so that their responses adhere to these requirements and preferences.

As far as we can tell, the new menu is still based on ready engineering. It simply presents itself in a user-friendly way.

OpenAI has previously said it applies moderation to custom instructions to check if they adhere to its terms of use. Presumably, this hasn’t changed with the revamped customization settings.

OpenAI has sought to refine ChatGPT as its user base grows, adding capabilities such as live web search is a “Canvas” interface suitable for writing and coding projects. The company said in December that more than 300 million people use the chatbot every week.
