In a major development for the Afghanistan cricket team, a legendary cricketer from Pakistan has been appointed as a mentor for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday (January 8) and indicated that Younis Khan will join their men’s team ahead of the tournament, which will take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
Younis Khan, known for his exceptional batting and leadership skills, brings a wealth of experience to the Afghan side. He has previously served as the batting coach of Afghanistan 2022 and is highly respected for his contributions to cricket. Throughout his illustrious career, Younis scored over 10,000 runs in Test matches and played a pivotal role in leading Pakistan to their first T20 World Cup victory in 2009. His experience will be invaluable as Afghanistan prepares for the prestigious tournament.
Sayeed Naseem Sadat, ACB spokesperson, has been enthusiastic about Younis’ appointment, noting his extensive knowledge of the game and his ability to inspire young players.
“ACB has assigned Pakistan’s top-class experienced player Younis Khan as a mentor for Champions Trophy 2025. He will join the team before the event starts in Pakistan.” Sadat told Cricbuzz.
“We believe his guidance will help our team perform at their best during the Champions Trophy.” he added.
The Champions Trophy will feature cricket’s best nations competing for glory, with Afghanistan aiming to make a significant impact under Younis’ tutelage. As the tournament approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this partnership will improve Afghanistan’s performance on the international stage.
