The country singer, 41, performed “America the Beautiful” during the ceremony on Monday, January 20, at the US Capitol building in Washington, D.C. She was accompanied by the Armed Forces Chorus and the US Naval Academy Glee Club – but she she doesn’t have any musical accompaniment.
After a few musical notes were played, there was silence. Underwood waited a few seconds for the technical glitch to be fixed before she asked if she should sing a cappella. “If you know the words, help me out here,” he told the audience.
He sang “America the Beautiful” with the help of all the inauguration attendees. Underwood shook hands with Joe Biden, JD Vance and Trump before leaving the stage. She wore a light gray sleeveless dress with a cowl neck and accessorized with a sparkling diamond bracelet and matching earrings.
Other performances at the inauguration included Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and the opera singer Christopher Macchio’s rendition of the national anthem.

A spokesperson for the President’s Inaugural Committee confirmed Underwood’s participation in the ceremony on January 13 after a copy of the leaked program was shared via X.

After Underwood received some backlash for accepting the gig, Whoopi Goldberg her defense during the Tuesday, January 14, episode of The Scenestating, “People do what they do for whatever reason.”
“I stand behind her,” Goldberg, 69, continued. “If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go and perform somewhere, I believe (she has) the same right. I have to support. It doesn’t mean I’m particularly interested. I won’t be watching, but that’s just me.”
The Scene cohost Sunny Hostin agreed with Goldberg, saying, “I think art is art, and you have a right to perform where you want to perform.”
Country music’s biggest names haven’t been afraid to go head-to-head over the years, exchanging blows on social media, making amends at award shows and more. During Trump’s 2017 inauguration, the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square performed “America the Beautiful,” while Jackie Evancho sing the national anthem.
