The caravan, found with an explosive substance in the external Sydney earlier this year, was part of a “fabricated plot of terrorism” invented by criminals, Australian police said.
The caravan, which was found in the Northwest Sydney on January 19, contained enough explosives to create an explosion of 40 meters wide, as well as a note reflecting anti-Semitic messages and a list of Jewish synagogues.
Its discovery, after a series of anti -Semitic attacks in Australia, caused a wide panic.
But on Monday, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) showed that they knew that “almost immediately” caravan was “essentially criminal work”.
The Deputy Commissioner for National Security AFP Chris Barreth said the investigators in the framework of the new South Wales team believed that the caravan was “part of the storyline of terrorism.”
Authorities came to this belief on the basis of the information they had already had the ease from which they found the caravan and the visibility of the explosives contained inside – as well as the fact that there was no detonator.
However, police abstained from informing the society that they believed that the plot was false “with great caution” as they continued to receive clues about other related subjects. Now they are convinced that these clues were also manufactured, said Ms. Bareth.
According to the police, the false area of the caravan participated in several people with different levels of participation. Between them, they planned to buy a caravan, load it with explosive substances and anti -Semitic materials and leave it in a certain place before informing law enforcement agencies about the “upcoming terrorist attack against Jewish Australians”.
Ms Barrett called it a “complex scheme, far -fetched organized criminals, domestic and offshore,” adding that the leader of the plot supported the distance and hired allegedly local criminals to carry out parts of the operation.
Police confirmed that the man was not arrested.
“Too many criminals are accused of paying others to carry out anti -Semitic or terrorism to attract our attention or distract our resources,” said Ms Barut. She also noted that the police believe that “a person who was pulling the lines wanted to change his criminal status.”
Ms Barrett referred to another person who allegedly tried to buy a strong weapon for a fake Terror plot so that he could provide information to the authorities in exchange for reducing the sentence.
The BBC News has contacted AFP for more details of the suspicion of the agenda of those who are hooked by the caravan but received no comment.
“Regardless of the motivation of those responsible for this false story, it had a cold impact on the Jewish community,” said Ms. Bareth in her statement.
“The fact that the organized crime has been done by the Jewish community is condemning, and this will not do without consequences. There was also an unjustified suspicion aimed at other communities – and it is also condemned.”
Separately, the new South Wales police detained 14 people on Monday morning as part of the Pearl strike: a police operation created in December 2024 to investigate anti -Semitic crimes in Sydney.
The creation of a strike was followed by a number of anti-Semitic attacks in Australia at the end of 2014, including the vandalism of the Jewish school in the eastern suburb of Sydney and arson of the children’s center, which was installed and sprayed with anti-Semitic messages.
