One of Karen’s leading arcs came during season 3 of the series, when she and Billy Hargrove (Montgomery) form a joint attraction. The story line was a bit controversial – Billy was still in high school at the time – but eventually Karen chooses to reject the relationship.
Buono, for her part, admitted that she was surprised by the story line given the a huge age gap between the characters.
“It was almost like it was a bit of a sort of off the show because only a kind of subjects was raising for an older woman and a younger man and flirting and perhaps having a relationship,” he remembered. “It seems apart from the Strangers World, but they go to him with humor. I think they also impose it with emotion as they do (when) Karen decided she can’t leave because of her family. “
Through all the good things of her character, he has never stopped loving Karen’s role – and remains surprised and loves how common Strangers Has become the pop culture zeitgeist.
“I always knew it was a special project when I first read the script, but I was definitely surprised by what phenomenon it came,” he reflected. “And I’m just very proud of the stories we’ve told and the links we’ve made with audiences around the world. That’s very rare to happen today with shows.”
He continued, ““ It has been a very rare and lovely experience to be part of something that has echoed with people across generations that don’t really happen. I love playing Karen. “

It was the first time I saw a bunch of people and it was a really great night,” he remembered Us. “The show was epic and wonderful, terrible, and last time (the cast) saw each other, we were ending the show. So many tears and a few months have passed now. So it’s definitely a sense of moving in that bitter way.”
Buono noted that she loved seeing her character’s “high school” version on stage. “He has been truly surreal walking on the set and away from the set, and I am very grateful for every second of it,” he added.

I think it’s completely transferable, though it happens to be involved with two men,” he told Us. “The emotions are really world -wide, and that’s what I really loved about it. It’s not trying to make a point about being a queer, just telling this lovely, honest story about falling in love and I think the more we see the most normal and celebrate it comes.”
Buono emphasized that “valid representation,” and queer love stories belonged in the romantic genre space.
“It’s about a connection. Almost a misconception, but then a connection,” he told Us. “Hopefully people will find that it is really special, and that it is a love story that does not focus on disclaimers or stereotypes, just something truly real and funny and hopeful for people looking for love in their lives.”
