The weekend of Mexican independence has always been one of the sacred battlefields of boxing. Julio César Chávez, Oscar de la Hoya, Floyd Mayweather: All used the holidays to cease their names. Now it is again the turn of Canelo Alvarez, bringing the flag of Mexico to Las Vegas for another stage show.
This time, the opponent is not a faded name or a local rival. It is Terence “Bud” Crawford: 41 wins, without defeats and the desire to pursue danger from light to an average weight. On Saturday night at the Allegant Stadium, live at Netflix (21:00 ET), Canelo puts all the belts in 168 on the line against the old undisputed king of two divisions. Two pounds of pounds that share a ring: a rare territory in the current fractured boxing world.
The truth is cold: the options were thin and the Saudi money drowned. Following its bankruptcy of 2022 against Dmitry Bivol, Canelo’s recent career has felt more as the risk management than the conquest: overcoming a almost retired Golovkin, overcoming a smallest jermell and walking around Ryder, Munguia, Berlanga and Scull.
The fans demanded from Benavidez. Instead, Alshikh hit a $ 400 million Riyadh season agreement. Suddenly, Crawford, once dismissed as “too small”, became viable. Canelo admitted him himself: “If money is well, why not at this moment of my career.”
Crawford is not trying the waters. It has gone directly from dismantling Errol Spence in 147 and marked Israil Madrimov at 154 until watching the champion in 168.
He admitted that Canelo was never in his radar due to the size of size. But the legacy shake the comfort. Could have defended against Jaron Ennis or cleaning the average weight. Instead, he chose the biggest prize: the opportunity to become the first man in the four belts with indisputable reigns in three divisions.
The risk is wild. Losing, and is not only the “0” that has disappeared, but is its aura as a three -pound fighter for pounds.
According to Espn, bookstores were leaned in Canelo at -175, with Crawford +140. The bias of size is cooked. Alvarez has not been a subdog since his second fight with Golovkin.
Neither of the two men throws in volume. Wait for measured exchanges. The Canelo Plan: Apply constant pressure, the exchanges of force in its terms, incline that 168 pound frame to all the clinch. CRAWFORD Answer: Change positions, use angles, counteract errors and let the speed be their armor.
Canelo fights when chasing. Crawford suffers if it was cornered. Who controls geography controls the fight.
Don’t wait for a lens. Canelo will try to stop the rhythm, keep things in the middle range and to be heavy in the clins. Crawford will try to frustrate with the movement, he will choose his spots and punish the surfaces.
If the coasts of Canelo, Crawford has the tools to punish him. If Crawford has to pay the ropes, Canelo will crush it. Either way, the paintings could be messy.
Not commercially. Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2015 still governs with 4.6 million purchases, and Mayweather-Mcgregor took place even more casual. But inside the ring? This could offer -more. Pacquiao faded in 2015. McGregor was a tourist. Crawford is not.
Attendance tells the story. About 65,000 tickets sold, doubling the old Holmes-Cooney Vegas record in 1982. Add Netflix to streaming worldwide and this could restore the sports distribution model.
If Canelo wins, it ceases to 168, but does not jump usyk or Inoue. Baptizing a smaller man will not crown him king.
If Crawford wins, the story is rewritten. Three indisputable reigns in three divisions. This has never been done. According to Crawford, “My hunger for adversity is what drives me. That’s why I struggled.”
Christian Milli vs Lester Martinez – Both undefeated, both punches. Mbilli is the number 2 of ESPN in 168 and pursues a title shot.
Callum Walsh vs Fernando Vargas Jr. – Walsh has the support of the UFC through Dana White, Vargas Jr. It has a family name. Less about belts, more about presumption rights.
Ivan Dychko vs Jermaine Franklin – Heavy battle that could stir the rankings.
In addition to Steven Nelson, Mohammed Alakel, Reitto Tsutsumi, Marco Verde Alvarez and Sultan Almohamed.
Canelo has done so before – AT&T Stadium against Liam Smith, the Saunders fight in 2021, Ryder in Guadalajara. Dozens of thousands does not hurt.
For Crawford, allegiating will be his first stadium struggle. The size, the noise, the show, whether sinking or combines is a stranger.
This struggle is not just pride: it is business. Netflix enters the PPV market. Alshikh is remodeling the boxing base for the Saudi support. Fighters like Canelo pursue sovereign wealth on sanctioning bodies.
If this experiment works, wait for more mega-littes built in streaming giants and Saudi banks.
Canelo has prevented the actual danger recently. Crawford looks for it.
If Canelo enters the discipline, it wins points. But Crawford is the guy to start the script. It is smaller, but more acute, more famous and willing to risk everything.
My Lean: Crawford by narrow and controversial decision.
