Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada plans to recognize the Palestinian state in September, becoming a third G7 nation to make such a statement in recent days.
Karni said this step depends on democratic reforms, including the Palestinian administration, which held the election next year without Hamas.
His comments come every other day after the UK announced that in September he recognized the Palestinian state if Israel disagrees with ceasefire and other conditions and a week after France presented a similar plan.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the announcement of Canada, calling it a “reward for Hamas.” Most countries – 147 of the 193 UN member states – are officially recognized by the Palestinian state.
Carney said Canada officially recognizes the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly.
He referred to the expansion of Israeli settlements on the occupied Western Bank, the aggravation of the humanitarian gas situation and on October 7, 2023. Hamas to Israel as a cause of the Canada’s dramatic shift.
“The level of human suffering in the gas is unbearable, and it is rapidly deteriorating,” Carney told reporters on Wednesday.
He said that the recognition of Palestinian statehood would depend on the obligations of Palestinian powers on fundamental reform and demilitarization of the territory.
Canada has long been committed to a two -state decision within the framework of the negotiation peace process, said Carney, but added: “This approach is no longer amenable.”
“Perspective of the Palestinian state is blurred before the eyes,” he said.
Karni told a press conference that he talked to the Palestinian administration President Mahmoud Abbas earlier on Wednesday.
The Palestinian authorities control the parts of the western shore through a party of Fatah, led by Abbas, and Hamas rules Gaza. No territory has held the elections since 2006.
Carney’s announcement was criticized by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
The report on X said the Canada’s plan “hurts the efforts to reach the gas in the gas and the hostage.”
Canada Conservatives also took the question of Karni.
“The recognition of the Palestinian state after the terrorist atrocities on October 7 sends the wrong message to the world,” the opposition party said.
The Prime Minister is pressure on the decision of Palestinian statehood, as the UK and France – close allies of Canada – have come out with their own statements on this issue in recent days.
Almost 200 former Canadian ambassadors and diplomats signed a letter calling for Karni to recognize the Palestinian state.
Canada’s principles, letter They said: “They refuse to move the massive bombing and the hunger of Palestinian civilians daily and the fierce attacks of extremist settlements on the western shore.”
Asked if he affected the UK and France’s announcements, whether he consulted with US President Donald Trump, Carney replied that Canada had made its foreign policy decisions.
If France and the UK are officially recognized by the Palestinian statehood, the United States is a strong ally of Israel – it will become the only permanent member of the UN Security Council to do so.
The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the attack under the guidance of Hamas on South Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people and took 251 people hostage.
Since then, more than 60,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and 154 people, including 89 children, died of malnutrition, the Ministry of Health’s Health reports.
