Brad Pitt have a trip with sobriety over the years.

Pitt attended anonymous alcoholics in 2016 following an incident on a private jet with his family which led to an investigation into child abuse. A week after the news broke, Angelina Joliewho married Pitt in 2014, who filed for a divorce. (Jolie and Pitt’s divorce continued in court until it was completed in December 2024.)

Later that year, Los Angeles Pitt’s Children and Family Services department cleared. In 2017 Pitt opened for stop drinking and how his life had improved.

“Personally, I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t bogging or I had a spliff or something. Something. And you realize that a lot of it, um – cigarettes, you know, are pacifists. And I’m running from feelings,” he said Gq at the time. “I’m really happy to be done with all that. That is, I stopped everything except bowling when I started my family. But even last year, you know – things I didn’t deal with. I was bowing too much. It becomes a problem alone. And I’m very happy that it’s been half a year now, which is bitter again.”

Be around alcohol

At the start of Pitt’s battles, she opened about how she refrained from alcohol especially when owning her winery, Miraval.

“I really enjoy wine, but I ran it to the ground,” reflection Gq In 2017. “I had to step away for a minute. And indeed I was able to drink Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good. I didn’t want to live that way anymore.”

Know when to stop

Previously Pitt told the New York Times In September 2019 he “took things as far as” he could so “moved” his “drinking privileges.” When the actor tried to recover, he was surrounded by men going through similar battles.

“All these men were sitting around openly and honestly in a way that I have never heard,” he remembered. “This safe space was where there was little opinion, and so a few opinions about yourself … it was actually releasing just revealing the sides of yourself. There’s a big value in that.”

During sitting down with Interview journal In December 2019, Pitt referred to his drinking habit as “escape” and “incompetent” for himself.

“I think we live in a time when we are extremely critical and quickly to treat people as disposable. We’ve always placed great importance on the mistake. “We’re all going to make mistakes. But what’s the next step? We, as a culture, don’t seem to stick around to see what that person’s next step is. And that’s the part for me to find so much more lively and interesting.”

While in AA, Pitt form friendship with Dax Shepard.

“You go around in a circle, it’s kind of whirlwind because it’s a very crowded room. Dax was usually close to the end because he had been a little. It’s kind of as an older statesman. And I really respected him,” he said during the June 2025 appearance on a Shepard “armchair specialist” podcast. “It was very open, honestly, a way to take whatever theme that seemed to go in the evening and then put it in the funniest package. And it meant a lot to me, it really did.”

Pitt added when he was AA where he was at a low point.

“I was trying anything and everyone, anything that anyone threw me at. It was a difficult time. I needed to restart,” he continued. “I needed to wake up the f *** in some areas.”
