“Hi everyone, I’m going to keep this short and sweet. I would like to announce my retirement from boxing,” Fury said. “It was a blast, I loved every minute of it, and I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wearing a mask. God bless everyone, see you on the other side.”

It is not clear why Fury mentioned Turpin. The Englishman was a highwayman and horse thief of the 18th century.

The “Gypsy King” lost to Usyk in a row. He lost by split decision back on May 18 and then lost via unanimous decision December 21. Both fights took place in Saudi Arabia. Fury lost multiple heavyweight championships during his first loss to Usyk.

Fury’s last victory was against Francis Ngannou via split decision.

If that is indeed the case for Fury, he will walk away with a record of 34-2-1 with 24 knockouts. Usyk’s losses were the only two blemishes on his record. In 2018, he drew against Deontay Wilder.

He previously announced his retirement before his 34th birthday in August 2022 and returned to the ring two months later.

Frank Warren, a boxing promoter who worked with Fury, told the BBC he had not spoken to Fury before his retirement.

“If that’s what he wants to do, that’s great. He’s done his best. He was probably the best British heavyweight of his generation to date,” Warren told BBC radio. “Two-time world champion, two intense fights against Usyk. He has a lot of money, he has brains, he has a wonderful family.’

Boxing fans were hoping that Fury would finally be able to fight Anthony Joshua in a battle between two of the best British fighters of this generation. However, at least for now, that won’t happen.
