WBC’s ex-heavy weight champion Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 43 kos) looked like a shell of his old self by eliminating the traveler Tyrrell Anthony Herndon (24-6, 15 kos) in his seventh round on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena de Wichita, Kansas.
Wilder landed two hands to the right at the Cape of the Hernon exhausted in seventh place, which caused the referee Ray Corona to stop the fight. The time was at 2:16 of the seventh round.
Hernon, 37, went down to rounds 2 and 6. The defeat in the second round was from the left hand by Deontay who caught Hernon when he jumped to land a shot. In the sixth, Wilder caught Tyrell against the ropes and punched him with shots, demolishing him with a right hand side.
Deontay’s deterioration
Wilder could not land with any degree of precision, even with Hernon stopped in front of him. Deontay would be lost repeatedly with the right and left hands.
What was noticeable was the loss of speed, power and accuracy of the hand with Wilder. His right hand was much slower than before, and he did not have the same crushing power as before. He would have said in an interview this week that he had been treating a right shoulder problem that had affected his power on this arm.
He said that the injury had been healed. However, the lack of power and loss of speed by Deontay showed that the injury was still there. If it is a permanent situation, Wilder will not be good at heavy weight in the top 15. Herndon is not a top -notch fighter.
Wilder has to fight Joshua now
It would be a good idea that “The bronze firefighter” would try to fight with Anthony Joshua as soon as possible. It would be too risky for Deontay this struggle because he cannot continue to fight the low -level opposition as he did tonight without the criticism of him.
Tonight, the best Deontay weapon was the left hand. Their hook and the left hook appeared as well as in the past. However, this would not be enough for Wilder to overcome good weights. The way to look tonight would lose the number 15 of the division to the lower feeders.
