Popular Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has undergone surgery and is out of danger after being stabbed at his home, his team said.
The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday morning in an upmarket area of the city of Mumbai where Khan lives with his family.
The city police told BBC Marathi that the actor was injured after a fight between him and an unidentified man who entered his house sometime after midnight.
Police have formed task forces to investigate the case.
“Khan has come out of surgery and is out of danger. He is currently on the mend and doctors are monitoring his progress,” Khan’s team said in a statement.
Khan is married to Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan and the couple has two children. The family has yet to make a public statement, but Khan’s team said they are safe.
Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai early on Thursday.
Neeraj Uttamani, the hospital’s chief operating officer, told BBC Marathi that Khan suffered six stab wounds, two of which were deep.
The exact details of the attack are still unknown. Police said an “unknown person” entered the actor’s home.
“After that, an argument broke out between Khan and the assailant,” Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedham told BBC Marathi.
Khan’s team said it was an “attempted hack” but did not share details.
“We ask the media and fans to be patient. This is a matter for the police,” they said.
