Most Dihard Nicolas Cage fans will be the first to admit that our true one God has undertaken some very suspicious roles during the aughts largely attributed to financial issues he tested behind the scenes. Of the generic revenge flicks as Seeking justice and stealing to the funny movies all over the place but cathartic as Drove Angry. In the 2010s, Nicolas Cage appeared to become more of a punch and a meme, but saw his revival career with 2013 Joe.
While the storytelling in Joe One of his own redemption in terms of his title character, we also have the privilege of seeing the greatest actor ever seen his own redemption of all kinds, as this is the film he saw critics calling it a return to forming for Nicolas Cage Cage which was high time.
Focusing on the mentorics relationship between Joe Ransom (Nicolas Cage) and Gary Jones (Tye Sheridan), Joe is a story about finding friends in unlikely places when you’re down on your luck. Gary is a teenager who lives with his aggressive alcoholic father Wade (Gary Poulter), and is looking for employment working for Joe’s wood poisoning company. After being praised for his work ethics, Gary gets a job for Wade, which instantly leads to both of their endings due to the attitude of Wade’s piss-poor.
A strong believer in the second chance, Joe Nicolas Cage lets Gary continue to work for him, but encourages him to hide his money from Wade, who is known to use his pay checks to drink himself into a non-verbal stupor.
As the relationship of Joe and Gary grows, Joe, a former Con-Conc, becomes the father’s figure who never had Gary, and both form an indivisible bond when Gary helps Joe find his lost, faith-like dog, after he runs away. After running in often with Wade, and a violent crime called Willie Russell (Ronnie Gene Blevins), Gary is defended and led by Joe, who despite his face Gruff wants the best of the troubled boy he has taken under his wing.
Nicolas Cage, who can do no step (fight me on this, and I will destroy you) but still need victory in public perception, surprising critics with his portrayal of Joe because of how complex he humbled his character in this film. Replace his signature excess Nicolas Cage is at the top in the form at the top, Nicolas Cage is at the top as Joe does everything he can to get an unfortunate child out of the dire situation the only way he knows how. Joe may be rough around the margins, but he still has a heart and believes in giving everyone a second chance – even if that second chance could eventually come back to disturb him.
Play him straight but with a cynical scowle, a bottle of bourbon in his hand, and a cigarette almost always hanging from his mouth, Nicolas cage Brings Joe to life in ways that no other actor can, and it is a shame that this film has been released so limited because it was one of those buried treasures in Cage filmography that many people were sleeping on.
