Bionic knee helps amputations naturally walk

NewNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

The ball or ladder climbing with ease after the amputation of the feet over the knee is now reached. MIT researchers have developed a bio -knee bio -knee mobility. Unlike traditional socket prosthetics, this system fixes directly to the bone and integrates with the surrounding muscle tissue. The result is faster, smoother and more natural movement.

Under Professor Hugh Hugh, the Mit team created a decision that not only imitates the movement, it responds to intent. This level of control allows the prosthesis to move in sync with the body, providing an unobstructed experience that challenges the definition of artificial limbs itself.

How the E-OPRA knee for amputers works

The technology is called E-OPRA (reinforced prosthetized Ossoetegrated for the rehabilitation of the amputeet). This includes the surgical implantation of the titanium rod into the hips, which directly connects with the robotic prosthetized limb. This core becomes the basis of a new type of interface between the body and the machine. But this does not stop it.

Using a specialized surgical technique known as the agonist-enlightenment of the musneurus interface (AMI), the muscles are again associated with functional pairs. These muscles “talk” to each other, sending signals to the robotic controller, which is calculating how the knee should move, reflecting how the real foot works.

Natural movement recovers with bio -knee for amputers

In the trials, two patients with this integrated system not only worked better, but also felt better. They were moving faster, with greater ease rose on the stairs and avoided obstacles with greater confidence. Most importantly, they felt that the protest was part of their body.

One participant who is only a few centimeters of the thigh can walk, turn and even smoothly beat the ball. This kind of intuitive, natural movement is a change in the game for amputers above the knee.

Why the bio -knee for amputers is the main breakthrough

Traditional socket prosthetics can be inconvenient, unstable and prone to infections. They often feel alien as a tool tied to the body, not to it. The bionic knee at all bypasses the socket. Connecting directly to the bone and muscles, it improves gross, reduces skin problems, and most importantly, restores the sense of control. And not only physical control, it is emotional and psychological. Patients who use the electronic OPRA have reported a greater sense of agency and body ownership than traditional or partially integrated prosthetics.

MIT BIONIC Knee for amputes managed by live experience

Professor Hugh Gerer does not just conduct research; He lives. Having lost both legs under his knee to frostbite in his teens, he returned to the rock climbing and dedicated his career to promote prosthetics. His personal journey force in the MIT laboratory, which continues to press the boundaries of biomechrome. And now this journey can change lives over the knee around the world.

If the bio -knee is available for amputations

While the results are innovative, the electronic system is not yet on the market. Larger clinical trials and approval of the FDA are ahead. Her, assuming that this technology may become more affordable for patients within five years.

Kurt’s key trips

We see the future prosthetics unfold. The MIT’s bio -knee -designed not only restores the function, but revisits it. Combining the advanced robotics with the human nervous system, it offers an amputation something invaluable: the feeling that their body is again.
