Billie Eilish unexpectedly dethroned Sabrina Carpentertrack “Espresso” as Spotify’s most streamed song of 2024.

Back Variety“Espresso” had a total of 1,774,525,704 listeners in 2024. Meanwhile, Eilish’s song “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” passed Carpenter’s pop track with 1,775,172,881 streams last year.

At the time of writing, “ADAR PLENTYN” remained in the same spot as it reached 1,781,210,003 streams while “Espresso” had 1,778,582,288.

When the music streaming platform dropped its Data wrapped in December 2024, he declared that Carpenter, 25, had claimed the No. 1 position. At the time, Benson Boone“Beautiful Things” was the second most streamed song while Eilish, 23, and “ADAR PENTYN” were third.

Carpenter released “Espresso” in April 2024 as her lead single Short ‘N Sweet an album. While “Espresso” debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number three in June. The inevitably viral track was then dubbed the song of the summer. In an interview in August 2024 with VarietyCarpenter shared that she was to start getting pushback for wanting to choose it as the lead single of her album.

“I was alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso.’ Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to ‘the powers above,’” Carpenter said at the time. “There was a lot of questioning behind whether it made sense.”

Eventually, Carpenter got her way – and it was proven right.

For her part, Eilish dropped her third studio album Hit Me Hard and Soft in May 2024. When the album was released, the first single was the suggestive “Dinner” followed by the more curious “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”. “Dinner” debuted on the Billboard charts there and then at number 5 with “ADAR PENTYN” coming in at 12th. In July, Eilish chose “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” as the album’s second single which caused her to climb the charts.

Eilish’s brother and colleague Evidence shared in a December interview with Variety that he was unsure if “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” would resonate with fans even though loved ones said otherwise.

“I’m kind of very suspicious when people tell me they think something is going to be a big hit, because it feels like jinxing it—or because, usually, people saying that about things that sound like something else that already exists,” the producer explained. “You know, no one had said that about ‘Bad Guy’ before it came out, and I think the reason no one said that was that it actually sounded new. Anyway, having said that, every time we played ‘Birds of a Feather’ to the label or to our close friends, they would get angry.”

In November 2024, Carpenter and Eilish accepted Grammy nominations. Eilish is up for seven awards this year, while Carpenter has earned six nominations. “Espresso” and “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” will face off again in two categories: Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
