Bill Haney says he wants Gervonta Davis to be Devin Haney’s next after Tank defends his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on March 1st.
If Bill gets his wish, Devin will come off a long layoff to fight Tank (30-0, 28 KOs). He may have to drop to 135 or a catch weight of 137.
The contest would be seen as a payoff for the 26-year-old Haney, who is coming off a loss and likely at an all-time low in self-confidence. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) hasn’t fought since losing to Ryan Garcia on April 20, and Bill says Dev will be out of the ring for a year before fighting again.
“We don’t take shit. Tank Davis when he finished off Lamont Roach. How about that?” said Bill Haney on Knockoutboxing86 TV, when asked who Devin Haney will fight next.
It’s hard to say the reasons Behind Bill Haney brought up Tank Davis’ name as the guy he wants Devin to wrestle next. It could be one of these reasons:
A. Clout chasing to put Devin’s name in the spotlight
B. Redemption on a Big Payday Before Retirement
C. Believing Devin can win
D. Career revival at 135 against smaller fighters
Haney could reinvent himself by moving back to 135 and using his massive size for this division, as he did before moving to 140 in 2023.
Keyshawn Davis, a big 135 with the frame of a welterweight (147), is getting away with his meltdown down to lightweight to feast on smaller fighters. If Keyshawn could do it, Haney could join the party, rejuvenate his career and get that big payday against Tank Davis.
Devin will have to make a quick move because Tank seems serious about retiring after three more fights in 2025. He’s made a lot of money in his career and doesn’t seem interested in fighting beyond next year.
The loss to Ryan seems to have dampened Haney’s ambition. The two-division world champion hasn’t done anything since he was beaten by Kingry last April.
