A columnist for Politico criticized President Biden for his eventual selection of Medal of Freedom recipients, which included such liberal figures as Hillary Clinton and billionaire George Soros.
Politico senior editor Michael Schafer wrote about it that Biden’s choice for the award sends a strong signal that Democrats are “out of the loop” and argued that honor, once above politics, has now become another political battleground.
“The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian award and is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant public, community, or private endeavors,” the statement said. . Shaffer wrote that Biden’s election, announced on Jan. 4, actually shows footage of honorees who failed to defeat President-elect Trump during the campaign.
“For all their cultural and humanitarian achievements, Wintour and Andres aren’t exactly selling goods that ordinary Americans can afford,” Shafer wrote. “The Republicanism of the Romney and Cheney families lost the election because it was unpopular. (Cheney’s endorsement didn’t help the Democratic nominee this year, either.)”
Former Sen. Mitt Romney accepted the medal posthumously on behalf of his late father, George Romney, the three-term Republican governor of Michigan.
“For some Republicans — who particularly reacted against the inclusion of George Soros, a bankroller of liberal causes and a longtime target of the conservative smear campaign — it felt like trolling,” Schafer wrote.

“Worse still, the policy is unlikely to help Biden’s party or his legacy,” the columnist added.
He said that without Biden rising above the political fray in Washington, D.C., “the honorees also feel like a last-minute political diss of the incoming administration.”
“Skinning off seems a bit ugly outgoing president for honoring its favorites when the curtain comes down — especially since in this case the winners overcome the barrier of having spent years at the top of their fields,” Schafer wrote. “But the overtly political atmosphere means relegation the country’s highest civilian award, which is intended to celebrate a major contribution to America.”
