President Biden on Tuesday signed proclamations creating Chaquala National Monument and Satitla Highlands National Monument, which will protect hundreds of thousands of acres of land in California, during his final week in office.

The event was postponed for a week due to the destruction wildfires raging in Southern California, and Biden revealed that he wanted to hold the ceremony in the state, but it had to be moved to the White House.

“We are executing the most aggressive climate program in the history of the world,” the president said in the East Room of the White House before discussing national monuments. “Our natural wonders are the heart and soul of our nation.”

He said that in his second week in office, he signed an executive order that “sets a first-ever goal to protect 30% of all our lands and waters across America by 2030 … I’m calling this national campaign America the Beautiful.” .. According to the National Park Conservancy Association, Chacuola National Monument will protect more than 600,000 acres of public land in the California desert near Joshua Tree National Park and the Colorado River.

Satitla Highlands National Monument will protect more than 224,000 acres of land in Northern California in the Modoc, Shasta-Trinity, and Klamath National Forests and “provide protection to ancestral homelands, historic and scientific values, rare flora and fauna, and headwaters of vital water sources,” the US Forest Service reports.
