Birthday boy David Benavidez pushed WBA “regular” champion David Morrell during their matchup today, leading to a near brawl during his media workout to promote his headliner of the February 1.
The ‘Mexican monster’ Benavidez was spoiling a fight and was lucky that Morrell didn’t hurt him with the belt when he threw at him. Morrell threw it like a baseball pitcher.
When the two champions met face to face, words were exchanged and, without warning, Benavidez pushed the Cuban Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) across the room. Morrell responded by throwing his WBA belt at Benavidez, narrowly missing him with a head shot. The two teams immediately converged to avoid fists being thrown.
It looked like Benavidez was spoiling himself for a fight, perhaps angered by Morrell’s trash talk as he let the Mexican monster have it during the bout. Morrell likely reminded Benavidez that he had avoided him for two years and wanted no part in the fight against him.
Morrell is a huge threat to Benavidez’s future dreams of fighting the winner of the Arur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 rematch on February 22nd. There is a lot of money for Benavidez or Morrell to fight the winner of that contest.
So it’s understandable why Benavidez is so hooked. He literally cannot afford to lose this fight against the Cuban Morrell. If the 28-year-old Benavidez is knocked out by KO artist Morrell, he will have a long way to go back to the top. Next time won’t be easy.
“I am very excited. It’s the biggest fight of my life, and I’m in the best movement of my life physically and emotionally,” David Benavidez told Fight Hub TVreacting to his altercation with David Morrell during their confrontation during media training.
“Everything is 100%, and I will go in there and get the win by knockout. Today was my birthday so I didn’t want to be too pushy. I tried to shake his head, but he kept making his mouth. I will not let anyone disrespect me like that,” Benavidez continued about Morrell.
“I don’t know who this guy thinks he is. He thinks he’s the toughest man on the planet. I’m going to beat the crap out of him. There’s nothing more to say. He’s a great fighter, yes, but I’m going to make all these big wrestlers look normal.”
Morrell has a birthday present for Benavidez 😳
