Under the deck‘S. Hugo Ortega He remembered his complex relationship with religion – and his family – after Jehovah’s witness.
During the episode on Monday, July 21, from the popular Bravo series, Hugo opened for his childhood, sharing, “I probably got into sailing like many others. I was traveling and escaping the life I had before.”
The Bosun revealed that he “grew up as Jehovah’s Witness” before leaving it after.
“I didn’t celebrate birthdays or Christmas. But I left when I was 17,” he explained. “I leave the religion a huge conversation point with my parents. I know for them that there is a lot of guilt and they think they were not nurturing things in me properly. It’s a sore subject.”
Hugo continued: “But I don’t think anything was wasted. What would have been wasted if I had stayed in that life I didn’t like.”

“I was in foster care. My father died when I was 9 of multiple sclerosis. And then my mother died when I was 13 in her sleep. He was very sharp and no (they don’t know what he was),” she said in a February 2024 episode. “So I and my brother were thrown into the system and separated them.”
According to Cat, a group of people looked after, adding, “The family I lived with that I don’t talk to because they are like a cult religion.”

“We were (in the same state). But they wouldn’t even let me talk to him because he wasn’t religious,” he continued. “That extremity of religion wouldn’t even let me talk to my own biological brother.”
In confession, Cat offered more details about her difficult home life, sharing, “So I grew up in Orange County, California, with a foster family in a place called Yorba Linda. From 13 to 18, I was part of the culture and life and dynamic of this family.”
She only turned up to 18 can take control of her life.
“Because I want to continue a relationship with my biological brother, they were like, ‘No. We don’t support that,’ he continued. “Once I turned 18, I decided to choose my brother and choose my life. I decided to live for myself and that’s when I became the most independent. Now I’m my brother so close. It’s like my best friend.”
