Best known now for his roles at dark TV shows like “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout,” Ella Purnell is one of those performers whose filmography goes much further back than you would think. She is the type of actor where you watch an older movie for the first time in a while and realize, “Wait, that was Challenge? “I myself had had that exact realization when I re-watched” Miss Peregrine’s home for amazing children “for the first time since he came out in 2016. On another place, on Twitter (sorry, x), other people seem to have the same realization about the 2013” Kick-ASS 2 movie. “
As “Kick-ASS” fans will remember, the superhero sequence included a story line about Mindy, Aka Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), trying to transfer from a life from fighting crime to one of a regular high school drama navigation. In doing so, she runs unclean from Brooke’s mean girl (Claudia Lee), who bullies Mindy in ways that may come off as trivial but nevertheless still hurts Mindy’s feelings. Dolce is one of Mean Girl Brooke’s Mean Girl, played by Purnell. Dolce has little to do in this film, but you will be quiet that we are supposed to see as another shallow girl who deserves the one Comeuppance that Brooke receives very much.
And what’s that comeuppance, exactly? Well, ultimately, Mindy draws a weapon that she calls “S ** T stick,” which makes people unruly vomiting and fabrates the moment she touches. In the middle of their lunch period, Mindy then goes on to touch Brooke and join him, causing the two girls to soil themselves in front of the whole school. Yes, I know, “Kick-ASS 2” is not a good movieBut at least it allows us to watch Ella Pre-famous Purnell enjoy a few minutes of screen time.
Purnell had a thankless role in Kick-ASS 2, but she nailed her anyway
What is interesting about Purnell’s “Kick-ASS 2” role is that the script gives her nothing to work with, but she makes it memorable anyway. She takes a role that is a less good version of Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) from “Mean Girls” and elevates him with his innocent delivery of lines like, “But we were going to go high on bath salts at Logan House!” Ultimately, Dolce is presented as a follower, someone who goes together with Brooke’s cruel antics not because she herself is wicked but because she doesn’t have her own sense yet. At least, that’s my reading based on the shorts of information that “Kick-ASS 2” offers for the character.
Although Dolce is low on people’s lists of Ella Purnell’s best characters, you can see tips of it later, more famous here. Dolce’s fake friend does not act to Mindy that far from the way Jackie “Yellowjackets” treats his Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) pal in the first few chapters. Granted, Jackie is a much more sympathetic (and complex) character, but his subtle, forgetful condescension towards Shauna is something that is easy to imagine a slightly older dolce convicted.

Jackie was certainly a flawed person, but Purnell made her so similar anyway until fans (my own content) still feed a grievance against Shauna two seasons later about how she treated her. “Yellowjackets” may have been eight years in the future when “Kick-ASS 2” was released in theaters, but from Purnell’s limited screen time, you can already see some of the qualities that would make it a star.
