BCCI introduces new guidelines for Team India players, their wives and families

In a significant move aimed at improving discipline and accountability within the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new guidelines regarding player conduct and family presence during visits. This decision comes on the back of recent disappointing performances, including a 1-3 defeat at Border-Gavaskar Trophy v Australia and a defeat by 0-3 to new zealand.

Overview of nnew guidelines

From January 14, 2025, the BCCI has implemented several key regulations for Team India players and their families:

  1. Limited family presence: Wives and family members will now only be able to accompany players for up to 14 days during visits lasting 45 days or more. For shorter visits, family visits will be restricted to seven days.
  2. Mandatory team travel: All players must travel together on team buses, regardless of seniority. This rule also extends to the support staff, including the head coach Gautam Gambhirwhose manager will no longer have access to team facilities such as VIP boxes or hotels.
  3. Additional baggage charges: Players will be responsible for covering additional baggage costs that exceed 150kg, promoting a more streamlined approach to travel.

These guidelines were discussed during a recent meeting attended by BCCI officials, Gambhir and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The board aims to foster greater unity among players and ensure that distractions are minimized during visits.

Rationale behind the changes

The BCCI’s decision is based on concerns about the team’s performance and internal dynamics. Reports indicated that the presence of the players’ families, esp Virat Kohli i Rohit Sharmaduring previous tours may have contributed to distractions, affecting team cohesion. The board’s initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility among the players, especially after the underwhelming results on the international stage.

Upcoming challenges for Team India

India will embark on a busy schedule in the coming weeks, starting with a five-match T20I series against England on January 22, followed by a three-match ODI series. The team will head to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy from February 19. These new guidelines are expected to play a crucial role as India aim to regroup and focus ahead of these important matches.
